I'm assuming your tiller gearbox is the same design as my thrower gearbox. If it were mine, I would atleast replace the keys on the gears like Adam said. It may sound better now, but too much lash can take out the gears....and they are expensive. You can replace the keys by taking off the cover and removing the snap ring and sliding off the gears, no need to disassemble everything.
