I grew up when leech fields were commonly used as sites for corn and a few other veggies. And an open sewer on a neighbor's farm grew the most magnificent blackberries anyone had ever seen. My Mom wouldn't let me eat them, but some folks did - and I know of no problems.
Another factor might be the depth of the field. I added a few feet of topsoil over mine just to level it and planted grass. I imagine I'd be fine gardening that since the field is deep. I do have a potato patch fairly close to the leech field, and don't worry about it.
