I have seen them slip when the front crankshaft seal leaks and oil gets on the clutch. If you suspect this, spray aerosol brake cleaner on the clutch while it's disengaged and then hit the high grass again and see what happens.
I also just happen to have one that doesn't engage as forcefully as other electric clutches on an 1864. No oil on it( used to have) but it just doesn't jerk into engagement like others. I think the coil on the clutch is somehow weak but it still cuts grass just fine so I'm not going looking for trouble.
