I took the decals off the hood of my 1864 due to them peeling off somewhat on their own. I used a mixture of vegetable oil and baking soda, simply mix them together in a jar and it becomes a paste. Rub the paste on the adhesive and allow to sit overnight. Worked well, you may have to apply more than once and it didn't seem to harm the plastic.
