It wasn't a cub tiller, but I once borrowed a Troy bilt horse tiller with tines wore down to sharp points. It did not till full width and it left a ridge in the center under the gearbox. I went over it 6 times in different directions trying to overlap and remove the ridge (it was hard to see as it was under tilled dirt). After a new set of tines, it tilled like a dream. Sammac had a pretty badly worn set that probably would not have worked well had he tried them, there are a couple pics here:
