I pulled the 1872 into the shop and drained the oil and removed the filter, while I waited for the parts store to deliver the filter I surfed some occ. Once the filter arrived I put it on and poured in the oil, I then pulled the dipstick to find out it was bone dry. Turns out if you want the oil to stay in the engine you have to put the plug in.
