A two stage isn't just for log splitters. They have other applications. It's just not needed in this application.

Not all heavy equipment use gear pumps. Some do. About all use piston pumps now days. Have for several years. Gear pump is a gear pump. Has nothing to do with the size of the application. Just the type and demand of the system. In this application, it's a low cost choice. Piston pump would be expensive, but much, much better. Except for the fact that most of them can't suck, and have to be charged. Some can, like in a JD tractor. But that's one of a few examples.
