You may want to go ahead and start a "working on it" thread in either the Kohler engine or IH Cadet section. I would go to the IH Cadet section as you may have several areas (such as your serial tag) to ask questions about.
OK, if you have air coming out the exhaust, at least the piston isn't stuck (or rod broke). To be sure, shine a flashlight in the spark plug hole and see what you can see moving. On some engines you can carefully stick a screwdriver or long piece of wire in the sparkplug hole and touch the top of the piston so see if it is moving when you roll the engine over by hand. Obviously one must be careful not to get something bound up when you do this.
