It's kinda easy to overcomplicate this... Pay attention there will be a quiz at the end.

Up to the Quiet Line series, Cub Cadets were all either two or three digits.

There were several different "series" of tractors made during different time periods.

Originals. 1961 to Aug of 1963

70/100 series. Basically the same tractor except different size engines. All 70 and 100 models were made between 8, 1963 and 8, 1965 These two don't necessarily follow the number system "rules".

The next series was built between 8 of 1965 and 11 of 1967.

The last digit in the model number denotes the series. This series ends in "2" or "3". Even numbers are gear drives and odd numbers are hydros.

The first two digits tell you the horse power of the tractor. "10" is 10hp and "12" is 12hp.

So, the 10 hp model in this series is a 102 (10 hp) and "2" being a gear drive in the series. The 12hp gear drive model would be 12 (for the hp) and "2" for the series. The only hydro in this series was a 12hp (12 for the hp) and 3 for the hydro of the series.

Therefore the "1X" is a variable for the hp and the "2/3" indicates the series.

That should be enough to make you crazy... Just in case it is not, there are the 7hp models of each series (until they bumped that up to the 8hp starting with the "Wide Frames").

In the 1X2/3 series, the 7hp model is a "71". This makes absolutely no sense to anyone so don't be alarmed. In the next series the 7hp model is a 72 and then the model 73 in the series after.

The next series was made from 11 of 1967 to 8 of 1969.

We call these the 1X4/5 series. In this series the "72" was the 7hp model and there were two more gear drive models and two hydro's.

On a side note, all 7 and 8 hp tractor models were gear drives, regardless of the last digit in the model number.
