I'd be more worried that too much would super heat the shaft.... which would defeat the purpose.
When I said HOT, I was referring to the torch. Piddly little propane torch doesn't get hot enough. An acetylene torch gets HOT, HOT, HOT!
But you are correct. Don't overheat it..... fine line, that only experience can determine. But I doubt it comes off without some heat.
