I've been a mechanic for about 20 years. I'm here to tell you, when it comes to parts, more expensive is most always better. Not always, as dealers charge more for parts than part stores do for the exact same parts. That being said, is why I linked you to the Kohler R/R on ebay. Same part, just smaller price tag. Yes, you bought a Stens R/R, which is an aftermarket replacement. Not a name brand part for less. It's literally a cheaper part. Not knocking Stens, as I use them quite often.... but it is a "cheaper" alternative. I don't think $40 for a regulator is too much to spend. You already know what the "cheap" parts are like. There are exceptions to this. Example: engine rebuild kits. The aftermarket kits are an excellent alternative to the high priced OEM kits.
I agree there is a difference between being a good steward, and being cheap. But at this point, your being cheap. Being a good steward is finding the Kohler R/R for $20 less from a different supplier.
