Great question. I am redoing a 72 that had the same issue(s) with the dash tower. As J-mech said battery acid can badly damage it. In my case, battery acid and exposure to the elements caused significant pitting and over damage. I am having it powder coated and the dash would require extensive body work and expensive, difficult to use compounds to fill in the pitting. I found a donor model that is in great shape and will be cheaper and easier to refinish.
