I have a 2176. The PTO on mine switches power on a relay which provides voltage to the magnetic clutch that locks the PTO to the engine. Yours most likely is the same. If the relay is engaged the tractor will not start. If the relay is weak and the coil can't maintain the magnetic field that holds the contacts together the PTO will disengage when cutting. Check to see if the switch is providing voltage to the coil side of the relay. If it is(cycle it a few times to verify) then the relay itself is the primary culprit.

Where about is that relay located? Can it be replaced?

This is really going to help now and in the future ... I really appreciate it.

I tried to remove the plug for the PTO to clean it, but that sucker is on there ... I just spray some contact cleaner on the terminals that were exposed. I don't have that upper body strength you boys do ... any other way to remove it besides brute force?
