Just check things as they are, and eliminate things one @ a time.
The coil might be bad, but make sure the points are making/braking as they should and not grounding out.
Sometimes it's where the wire is connected to them, or on the cover or a bare place to the coil, or on the points themselves.
When you are sure they are operating correctly, you might be surprised that the coil works even though it is out of spec's.
It costs nothing to try.
