Default Chinese Starter-Generator

The Delco 1101691 S/G in my 149 needs replacing. I was hoping it only needed new brushes but when I opened the S/G about the only part that looked in good shape were the brushes. The armature magnets had cracks and the field coil had broken wires and melted insulation. Also a bronze bushing in the end cap was worn egg-shaped into the steel cap. I don't understand why but my S/G does not have a bearing like the ones in the rebuild kits.

I'm thinking of bringing it to a shop to see how much it would cost to rebuild but field coils go for $55, armatures $58, and brushes $10 so I expect the cost to be far more than the $133 I paid for a rebuild in 2003 for my other 149.

On eBay are aftermarket S/G's for $105 delivered. I presume these are made in China and I wonder if anyone has had experience with these. Some Cub Cadet aftermarket parts made in China can be good, such as the carbs, but others such as the starter I put in my 682 failed within a year.
