Not sure where your gas could be going, a tank of gas in 15 minutes should flood the engine out to the point it won't even run. Letting the engine idle to cool down to avoid a back fire is standard procedure on most cubs, if you shut it off hot the engine pumps raw air/fuel into the hot muffler where it is ignited.
