I haven't had great success with autometer gauges. VDO is my preference these days. You should almost be able to hold on to the upper radiator hose continuously at normal operating temps.
Also, make sure your radiator cap is good and then pull the overflow tank lid/hose while running and see if there are any bubbles coming out. If so, you've got combustion gasses making their way past the headgasket into the cooling system.
