Sound like you got your hands on a real PITA, I'll bet they weren't two ply's either.
It sounds strange until you've done it, but the smaller the tire, the harder it is to mount. Once you get ahold of it you can't do anything with it and you can't do anything with it until you get ahold of it.
LMAO, my Brother and I have been using bumper jacks and tire tools to break down and mount tires since we were kids. I guess poor people has poor ways...
