Friend that I am helping has a pile of K161's, probably 10 engines anyway. At least 3 have the 6 digit serial without a letter prefix making them pre-1965. Two were in the 524- - - to 546 - - - range and one is definitely a 6 digit 413- - - number. It clearly is a 4 as first digit. We can tell this K161 is an early one, there are some very subtle differences in small items such as bolt head markings, brace for the oil bath air cleaner, and the serial badge, when compared to a letter prefix serial engine. My buddy thinks that the 413- - - motor came in on an early 4 digit Original.
Thanks for the link John. I think you are right that those serial number may be for the gensets. The serial numbers I have looked at don't seem to fall anywhere near that sequence.
