I'm going to agree with George, I wouldn't trust any of the tinwork, the filler neck or air cleaner as that is all easily changed. My y/w 782, the selling guy 'thought' it had a series 2 because it had the round air cleaner. I drove 6 hrs to get it, and it's a series 1. The engine wasn't a deal breaker for me so I took it anyway.

I take a flashlight and look through the grill at the area George described when I look at a twin.
