Doing a bit of reading, it looks like JD started putting Series II in the 317 (built from ‘79 until ‘83) in ‘82.

Depending on who you ask, they offered a retrofit kit to put an Onan in either before the Series II came out or after the 318 came out in ‘83 with the Onan 18hp.

I suppose I’d be pretty pissed too if my $11,000 tractor (in today’s dollars) needed a new $2000 engine after 3 years or less of running.
