If you don't want to convert it don't. It probably has a poor connection somewhere, but the coil could have failed if it hasn't ran in a long while, and been sitting out. I'd be more likely to think corrosion. Those 6V systems WILL NOT start on a damp day. You have to dry the inside of the dist cap. Condensation will get in it and it won't fire. BTDT for years and years on an old Farmall 340 we had on the farm. Anytime it was damp, we pulled the cap. There was an old hair dryer in the barn hanging on a post next to the tractor for days it wouldn't start.
