As mentioned, pushing a rubber hose onto any fitting can sometimes skin some rubber off the inside. It might hang there for years before it comes off and goes downstream.

The rubber cone on the float needle might be petrified after 40 years.
Your cheapo carb is one step above mine with a plastic float...

I tried a new oem kohler needle and seat on the old carb already
