I rebuilt the steering column today. Interesting in reading the service manual there are suppose to be 10 ball bearings upper and lower. I noticed in taking mine apart that there was a space as if a ball was missing and when I counted them each had 9. Someone had it apart at some point. You can actually see it in the picture. Mine did have both clips upper and lower. I had never run into those before on either my Cub 100 or the John Deere Round Fenders I have rebuilt.
The upper bearings and cup were pretty rusty. I have had this for almost a year and during that time it has been in a shed, but when I took the column out there was water in there. Fortunately the lower bearings were protected with grease. in any case I used the rebuilt kit to get it back where it should be. I tuned up some small groves in the cam follower by had on a belt sander and it seemed to come together and adjust nicely. No more slop like before. Of course until it is all put back together in the tractor who knows for sure.
