So, your pedal doesn't return to neutral on it's own? While the handle on the dash holds it's own place, I would think finding neutral on the pedal would be hard. On the dash, there is a neutral position that is easy to find. I'm not sure your way is the safest if you rely on the foot brake to center it in the neutral position.
There was a guy on here a long while back who did this mod. He used a spring centering device to set neutral on the foot pedal. It was off the hand levers of a ZTR machine, and easy to obtain. He just attached it to the pedal, and neutral was adjusted in. If his foot came off the pedal, or it got "bumped" it would self center. I'll dig around and see if I can find the thread, but it was really a long time ago. At least 4 or 5 years....
