All the ones you see are built as belt driven units. You can still buy them new. Northern Tool sells them.
Yes, if you can machine, a alternator head can be converted. It's possible that the company who made the alternator may even have a drive end cap to convert it.
Yeah, I didn't remember seeing this in previous threads in the Homemade section. But I wasn't looking specifically for it though.
