Not to send this off the rails..

I think some here might be mistaking hardened steel for tempered steel.

Truly Hardened steal is extremely difficult to machine, cut, sharpen etc.

Tempering steal is done to relieve internal stresses to the material. It makes it tougher but not as brittle or hard as hardened steel. It also leaves it tough but machinable.

From what I understand most mowing blades are 1085 steel which is carbon,nickel composition. Its the same steel leaf springs are made of.
