Good point ! I had a Kawasaki 750 SXI jet ski back in the late 90's and went off a big wake, hit the water hard and it immediately started running terrible.

After hearing opinions from 25 "experts" (including me) and checking everything multiple times I finally realized...timing !!

Pulled the flywheel off and there it was, sheared key ! I was SO happy to see that. I guess the impeller bit into the water hard and the flywheel rotated just enough to shear the key, then since it was running so bad, never got under load or shock enough to rotate any further on the crankshaft.

Anyway, I'll always remember how happy I was to see that key sheared and that's all it was.
