Today I pulled apart the rear driveshaft joint and realized the greater part of the noise is coming from the pump. After inspecting another old one I had on the shelf it appears the only thing that could rattle is the piston block on the splined shaft.

Applying a load via putting a slight pressure on the steering wheel and the rattle goes away. Right after cranking when the oil is thick it doesn't make a noise either.

It seems like the power pulses of the diesel engine are slamming the splined shaft and the piston block together. Is this a normal occurrence? Seems like it would hammer the splines off over time.
