"as the OP discovered, welding the end on won't last long." I made a repair in a hurry and didn't consider the shaft hardness. The broken weld showed I failed to get the desired penetration. I'm confident that won't be the case now.

This is the first Winter I've plowed with this 1872 and I'm happy to have learned about the lift helper link. I imagine it will be good to have for my 54" snow thrower. The tractor (1872) I used the previous two Winters has the rock shaft all welded together.
