Turns out to be a Kohler 17 Series Two, and not the m18. Oh well. I still like the engine! Its out of a Ford LGT 17, I'm figuring. The later Ford garden tractors came with the M 18's.

Not a lot of difference in the series 2 vs the magnums.
The series 1's is where the low pressure splash connecting rod oiling, caused early demise.
Magnums have a magneto ign. instead of points/coil on the series 2, and other small changes internally were made.
They were basically a slight upgrade in a good 2nd design before the production of the opposed flathead twin ended.
Still my favorite opposed twin.
