I had a 2084 a few years ago and had a similar issue, the rear seal behind the flywheel started leaking oil and the grass was sucked in there and was caked around the motor. That caused the motor to overheat. Your other issue with it backfiring might be, your coils as they are behind the same cover. I would check there first and replace the coils and seal.
