I disagree, or at least my experience with these dampers is that the centering point is not mid way. In other words pulls out more than pushes in ( or vice-a-versa). See the compressions in the cylinder walls in the picture. And since your hydro linkage moves more in the forward direction than reverse, the damper must be in correctly.
I believe there are only springs inside, not gas or oil. The resistance it gives, by hand, is pretty much equal in both directions and noticeable but not substantial. Return to center from extension (or compression) does not snap back, dampened but not real slow either..
