I had to do this on my 1000 for the same reason. It was easy to do and the metal on metal noise went away when it was completed.

Thanks for the suggestions. I adjusted it a couple months ago when I changed the oil seal. I already took it off, but I’ll get it back on one day and readjust it and see if it goes away. I don’t see any obvious wear or damage.

I ran it for two and a half hours tonight plowing snow. It ran much better, and even seemed to start easier and have more power. I’m thinking the head may have been cracked since before I got it.
