ok, I stopped by the tractor in the dark with a flashlight and tried to contort myself to see the disc brakes while depressing the clutch/brake. I can't be 100% certain (dang bifocals) but I don't think the brake calipers were moving with the clutch ---so I am thinking they are stuck in a mostly closed position - which would explain why the person pushing me was able to get me moving and why each gear seems slower, because the brakes are slightly grabbing.
Are there any good videos or instructions on repairing these disc brakes ? I think I saw a video of brake repair on a 1450 - Roland do you know if that is the same brake design on the 126 ? even though those 2 tractors are probably 10 or 15 years apart in age

Thanks Cooperino for the suggestion - but the tractor seems to go in gear well each time
