Default Hot wire

I repaired the pto clutch on a new-to-me 169 and when I started it up, the wire insulation on the wire to the positive terminal on the coil started burning. I shut the engine off immediately. The tractor ran well before the clutch repair and nothing else changed. I suspect that the voltage regulator may have malfunctioned and let too much current go to the coil, but before going any further, any comment or advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!
