Best thing I've found in lieu of power steering is to rebuild the steering box and use a bearing and a nylon nut in place of the jam nut. Also add a wheel bearing on top of the column where the plastic bushing is. It helps with steering.

I know this doesn't answer your question but I didn't know if you knew of this upgrade.
