If they say it is for your model tractor,
then it should work.

You do ground the field externally, that is how the charge is regulated, by varying the field windings.
If you ground the field directly, manually, it will charge full output.
So it sounds correct.
If you can't return it, might as well as try it.
Just hook it up right, paying attention to the markings on the regulator.

if it says BATT, it goes to the bat wire.
If it says Field, it goes to the field, ---that is the small terminal on the Starter/generator.
The other one is Gen sometimes labeled Arm, it would be the larger terminal on the Start/Gen.
The regulator needs a good clean ground.
