Default I have a 1641...

Hi, I have a 1641 with the vTwin B&S. Kindly note the initials of the engine mfg ; )
While I have not taken this one apart, my first guess is that you are gonna spend a long time looking for an alternator...B&S tends to pull a trickle charge off the magneto and you can expect to get about 3 amps off of it. You mention that the only time the load indicator glows is when the PTO is engaged...are you sure? Start the engine, then move the key one click to the left and turn the headlights on...the Load Indicator should glow and it is normal to see this until you are at about 1/2 speed.
Again, I am just guessing here, but if you are having voltage issues when you turn your PTO on, the problem is in the PTO.
Ammeters are popular, but almost useless. You want a Voltmeter, as it tells you what is really going on: Turn the key to "on", do you have at least 11.5 Volts? Start it up and see what your voltage is like fifteen minutes after running at full speed...I like to see about 13.8 - 14.2 volts, but understand that your mag can put out 110 volts, so don't leave a voltmeter hooked up when you have the engine wound up. You can hook it up, run the engine at 1/2 speed, check the voltage, turn on the lights, turn on the PTO, watch your voltage and all will be revealed....
