Dale, I actually considered something similar. But since I had the 5/8" rod already I wanted to try and make it look original. If the threaded tube strips out, I've got some 1" .093 wall tubing I'll flatten one end and weld a nut on the other end to use. I called Brinly before I did this and as you said, they wanted $18.95 for the crank and $23.95 for the threaded tube plus shipping.
