I have a Cub 1862: it has the original M18 engine but does appear to have a newer replaced PTO. I bought this machine used about 8 years ago and have another like it for parts, if necessary.
As soon as the engine is started the PTO starts spinning at a lower speed and not full power. While it does not disengage completely it does make the expected difference when I switch it on. For now, I am breaking the connection with the mower deck by disengaging the tension pulley, on the front of the quick attach/deck hanger. It has been working well to mow my 3 acres but I know that it is far from safe. And, I am even more concerned when I think about putting the snow blower on ?
I did read in another thread that this might be an indication of the front bearing going out in the PTO. Can anyone confirm that suspicion?
Otherwise, would there be another element of the PTO that would be a likely candidate for replacement?
I do not consider myself a seasoned mechanic, by any means, but after 25 years of working with the 1995-96 Cubs I try to tackle the problems as they arise.
Cub 1641 (out of operation; PTO kills circuit breaker; repowered w. B&S 18hp)
Cub 1861 (in operation; repowered w. B&S 23hp)
Cub 1862 (in operation w. PTO issue)
Cub 1862 (turn over but will not start. Acquired for parts)
*Mower decks and snowblower pair for each. Two sets working well the others for parts.
