Default Curious about transmissions

I had post a while back about old vs new MTD cubs and someone had mentioned that the newest XT3 was equivalent to my 2155 except for engine HP.

I was looking back at the specs and the do both have the same BDU-10 hydro transmission. Granted the 2155 has the BDU-10L variant, which as far I can tell doesn't have the extra hydraulic ports to power the power steering and deck lift or attachments, but should be the same otherwise.

So my question is more about the transmission itself. Is BDU-10 just the hydro pump itself or is it the entire transmission? Is an old BDU-10 the same as the new ones, or is it better/worse? I know everyone says the new stuff is crap and the old stuff is better, but if it's the same hydro what's the difference?
