The guard is a piece of steel with a bend in it, and the chute rotator rod is a piece of 3/8" steel with a couple of bends in it. You can make them easily.
Your 'guy at the mower shop' must not know how to use the CC throwers correctly. My neighbor has a newer JD garden tractor and snowthrower, and when he got a closer look at my QA-36A one time, he was surprised it wasn't a two-stage...he didn't think a single stage could throw the snow as far as it did.
