Default PLASTIC carburetor???

My neighbor is letting me borrow his "new" Murray push mower from 2015, so I can get some exercise in while cutting grass. I say "new" because he only used it twice then got a riding mower. But he forgot to drain the gas so the carb was all gummed up.

We pulled the carb off to attempt to clean it, and low and behold the damn thing was made of PLASTIC. In fact, almost the entire engine appears to be plastic. I even had to double take to make sure the block was indeed metal, as it looked very plastic-y as well. We ended up replacing the carb and it runs and cuts but still I'm baffled at this!

How is B&S getting away with this stuff? Is a plastic carburetor even a good idea? I feel like this entire thing is just made to throw away...
