Lou, that is the procedure I used when I first rebuilt this a couple years ago and have had the nagging leak ever since ( don't know if it leaked before I owned it or not ) I readdressed the leak a couple days ago and as long as you don't put a belt on it's great ! Looking at some pics of new shafts it appears the stub end of the pulley shaft is worn ( .485 ) dia. I believe this shaft was once .500 it's entire length . If I put the pulley fit end into the gear cover the play is very minimal as the bore in the cover is .504 and the pulley end of the shaft is .500 I think a new shaft is needed or I have a machinist bore the cover and insert a bushing to accommodate the worn end of the shaft , I can get a new shaft but if I ruin the gear cover that is a whole different story !
