Yes, I pulled the pully to move it closer to the spring too and tried the other tips you gave me here too. I did have the spring end pointing down since this how it is supposed to be attached. I need to be able to hold the spring somewhat vertical to insert the spring, but other parts are in the way such as the belt and the brake rod. The spring must go under these parts. I've never had this much pain trying to attach a spring before, and I think I may have to detach some of the deck itself so I can move it back to the rear a bit. Replacing a PTO cable should be easier than this and it should be engineered better to perform this.
