Default 1450 Drive Shaft - Ball Bearing or not?

Hey all,

I am currently in the process of replacing the flex couplers in my 1975 (per the serial number) 1450.

On the rear/hydro side of the shaft, I have read that there should be a 5/8" ball bearing. However, there was not one anywhere to be found when I drove out the pins and disassembled everything.

Inside the drive shaft side of the hydro flange, there is a bushing that the shaft slides into. The end of the shaft is also flat, such that the ball bearing wouldn't "fit" into the end of the shaft. Pics attached for reference.

Is this this updated drive shaft design that doesn't use a ball bearing? I only have 1 flex disc on each end of the shaft, and my understanding was that the later design used 3 discs total. Maybe what I read was incorrect. Am I okay to run without the ball bearing, or should I wait for the bearing I ordered to arrive before reassembly?

Thank you!
