Did you actually pull the flywheel off and inspect the key.
My experiences have been that the key can shear and the flywheel rotates.
You can remove the nut and washer and see the key which looks like it is in place when it really isn't.

Ironman - I will be pulling the flywheel today! I told my wife when this started up that I hoped it was the flywheel key because it would be the easiest - and cheapest - repair. So . . . I
