The last one I put on, I pulled the fenders off and got to looking at the hydro. It spun just fine but seemed stiff. I don't know what a good unit would feel like so I put it back together and installed the new belt. After about 3 minutes it started smoking.

I really don't want to get rid of the tractor. It only has 400ish hours and the Kawaski motor is great. So I would like to fix it but I have other mowers and don't think it's wise to put a lot of money into this tractor.

I see other Cub Cadets that look like they are very close to my 1527, I wonder if the hydro unit can be swapped?

Does anyone have any tips?

Have You ever changed the fluid? The Hydro-Gear In your 1527 is a serviceable transmission and Hydro-gear does sell rebuild Kit for there Transmissions
