I know that you didn't ask for my opinion but I'll give it in case you hadn't considered...
If you like to keep a cover on your favorite tractor, the vertical stack sticking up in the air prevents the cover from fitting nicely and securely.
And....
A vertical stack on small tractors exits the exhaust at the perfect level for face time. (i.e. fumes in eyes and nose)
